A location embellished by the sculpted outline of the "Parish Church of Nuestra Señora de Loreto", the marina is to be found in the north of Jávea, at the heart of a distinctly seafaring district.
Abahana Villas - Views of the Parroquia del Loreto in the port of Jávea.
The origins of the Marina in Jávea date back to the 15th century, although it was in the mid-16th century that the port began to take on a degree of importance, which gradually increased over the years.
It was in the 19th century that it achieved its golden age thanks to the raisin trade, and the first breakwater and wharf date from this era. When the business collapsed at the end of the century, however, it was confined simply to a fishing fleet up until modern times, when the arrival of new boats and such traditional events as the fish market auction generated real tourist appeal, along with Jávea's firm commitment to sport, leading the port to be modified to accommodate wonderful installations and services, along with a full range of commercial establishments.
A distinctly seafaring district stands around the port, with the sea in its veins and facing the beach, which means that the coming and going of the boats is always on view. With the development of tourism the port has gradually modernized to become a popular spot for a stroll, a drink on the terrace of one of the bars, a visit to the famous fish market to pick up some finest produce fresh from the sea, as well , of course, as the chance to take up a sport, as the port is home to a number of schools teaching sailing and diving to those wishing to get started.
Another notable building in the port area, aside from the famous "Parish Church of Nuestra Señora de Loreto" is the "Casa del cable" ("Cable House") dating from 1860, of which only the columns of the "naia", or gallery, remain. It has now been redesigned and refurbished as an exhibition space.
