Altea
The old town centre of Altea is the setting for the Handicrafts Fair that is held every year in the square in front of the Church in this little Alicante town.
The Fira y Porrat de Sant Antoni de Benissa is an event that combines history, tradition and a unique atmosphere that can only be experienced in this special corner of the Costa Blanca. From the spirituality of the baptism of animals to the hustle and bustle of the medieval market, this celebration is an opportunity to connect with the soul of Benissa and enjoy an unforgettable experience.
In the heart of Benissa, one of the most charming towns on the Costa Blanca, the Fira y Porrat de Sant Antoni is much more than an event: it is a journey through time, a tribute to the agricultural and livestock roots of the region, and a celebration of the community that is lived with intensity and joy.
Every January, Benissa dresses up to honour Sant Antoni Abad, patron saint of animals, in an event that mixes tradition, spirituality and popular culture. For several days, the streets are filled with life, offering activities that attract both locals and visitors.
The highlight of the Fira y Porrat is, without a doubt, the day dedicated to animals. In a ceremony full of symbolism, the inhabitants of Benissa bring their pets, horses, sheep and even farm animals to the square to be blessed by the parish priest. This rite, known as the baptism of animals, is not only a religious act, but also a gesture of gratitude and respect towards the companions of life and work who have been an essential part of the rural history of the area.
The image of Sant Antoni, adorned with flowers, presides over the offering, and the church bells resonate as attendees enjoy a unique moment of connection with their roots.
As part of the celebration, the Fira y Porrat merges with a charming medieval market that transports visitors to another era. The streets of the old town, with its stately homes and picturesque corners, are filled with stalls recreating ancient trades: blacksmiths working iron, potters moulding clay, leather craftsmen and weavers displaying their art.
The aroma of herbs, spices and local products permeates the air, inviting visitors to sample delicacies such as homemade sausages, aged cheeses, aromatic honeys and typical sweets such as sweet potato pastissets.
Street shows, with troubadours, jugglers and dances, add a magical atmosphere, while children's activities, such as workshops and traditional games, guarantee fun for the whole family.
The Fira y Porrat de Sant Antoni is not limited to the medieval market and the christening of the animals. During the days of celebration, the programme includes a wide variety of activities:
The essence of the Fira y Porrat translates into tradition and community, it is a celebration that transcends time, uniting the community around its most beloved traditions. It is a reminder of the value of their roots, of the importance of caring for cultural heritage and of the ability of small towns to offer unforgettable experiences.
