By the time May comes around, the springtime in Jávea is bursting with colour and joie-de-vivre, in part due to the Festival of the Sea, a major cultural, tourist, commercial and sporting event in which the region's businesses present their latest creations for the new season.
Abahana Villas - Práctica de flyboard en el Festival del Mar de Jávea.
It is a weekend that is brimming with handicraft markets, music and activities in a privileged setting on the shores of the Mediterranean.
Organized by the Association of Entrepreneurs and Businesspeople of Aduanas del Mar- ACEAM- the festival offers a wide variety of exhibitions, aquatic demonstrations, parades, concerts, fashion and even the last word in beauty. The idea behind this initiative is to consolidate the Costa Blanca as a reference point for the practice of all manner of water sports and to promote tourism outside the summer season, to highlight Jávea's gastronomy and in particular its star product - fish - and to increase awareness of the need to respect the sea and the beaches.
After the success of the first edition, which took place in 2012, the Festival has become a highlight of the start of the summer season in Jávea. So much so that, in later editions, the event has attracted leading figures from the world of TV and culture: last year Ángeles Ruíz, a well-known gastronomy journalist and author acted as the Festival's "Madrina" or "Patron".
The fact is that the activities, exhibitions and workshops that take place throughout the Festival are a good mouth-opener for all the possibilities that this coastal town offers during the summertime, and indeed, why not also in spring or autumn?
Days filled with activities for children and Mediterranean handicrafts are the starting point for what is a highly varied programme. During Jávea's Festival of the Sea we can enjoy a guided tour of the fish auction at the fishing port, we can try special menus in the GastroMar, or watch a prestigious chef put on a show cooking performance, we can have a free Pilates class, have a go at "Surf-ski-kayak", take a trip on a boat with a glass bottom so we can enjoy views of the seabed, we can even attend a fashion show!
An absolute delight with a great variety of flavours, for all tastes and colours…
The neighbourhood of Fornet de Altea welcomes hundreds of young people who are keen to participate in one of the most ancestral and anticipated events that are held to celebrate the arrival of the summer solstice and the fecundation of the earth that it brings.
Just before the summer solstice, Alicante dresses up to the nines to conjure up the time when King James II incorporated the land of Alicante to the Crown of Aragon, and endowed the province with an annual market fair that marked the beginning of the city's commercial activity.
A week of festivities, gala parades, conquests and reconquests bring the streets of Moraira to fever pitch, coinciding as they do with the start of the tourist season and the celebration of one of this Alicante town's most deeply rooted festivals: the Moors and Christians Festival.
