Fish market in Calpe

Every day at around five in the afternoon close by the fishing port of Calpe numerous tourists are attracted by the bustle of the fish auction, when the ships return as the sun goes down.

The market was built in 1991 to stage the fish auction, a traditional event in the towns of the region.

Calpe itself has excellent facilities for this, guaranteeing a well-run auction. Inside, visitors can view the auction in comfort from a walkway-platform opened in 1998, observing the different stages and tasks involved, in a truly seafaring atmosphere with the event lasting for some two hours overall.

It would be fair to say that the fish auction is today one of Calpe's most popular attractions, and involves the wholesale of fresh fish caught by the local fleet under the stewardship of the "Brotherhood of Fishermen", the finest example of the town's seafaring traditions, and a sector which has been one of the cornerstones of its economy.
